Ken Burns on Storytelling. In the five minute video below Ken Burns explains what he thinks are some of the key themes in the art of storytelling. One of the things that stands out to me is his assertion that “all story is manipulation.”

Reverse Key Lighting Explained
Nice tutorial and examples of Reverse Key Lighting over at Evan Richards blog. A very useful cinematography technique indeed.Reverse Key Lighting is also called “short lighting” or “narrow lighting”. The idea is that the key light is placed behind the subject rather than in front (the way you would probably see it set up in most cinematography books). In the world of news and interviews its sometimes called a “reporter sandwich” because of the way the reporter is sandwiched by the light behind him and the camera in front of him. Its a very versatile technique so lets take a look at some examples.

A Few Things Every RED SCARLET/EPIC Owner  Should Know.

James Drake from Denver-based RED rental house 5K Insight gave Dave Dugdale of Learning DSLR Video a hands-on with the RED EPIC camera, and the two videos are an excellent introduction to the RED DSMC system.

Color correct and grade right in your camera.

As great as using picture styles like CineStyle to acquire a very flat image for the maximum amount of post grading, the truth is HDSLR video codecs aren’t very strong and can fall apart quickly if pushed too far in post. If you are able, getting the image right in your camera is always the best option.

If You Wanted a ‘$3K for 3K’ RED SCARLET, JVC Has Something for You: a New 4K Camcorder for $5K RED killed their “3K for $3K” fixed-lens SCARLET camera. If that small-chip, big-resolution camera was something you were interested in, JVC has stepped in with the GY-HMQ10 (rolls right off the tongue!), a 4K (3840×2160, or “Quad HD” in RED parlance) compact camera with a fixed 10x zoom lens, which will land in March for under $5k. Recording to a VBR h.264 codec at up to 144Mpbs, the camera also does 1080p at up to 60 frames per second (something that many cameras at double or triple the price can’t do). More »>

Vimeo’s New Redesign

I’ve always been a fan of Vimeo’s clean design, not to mention their filmmaker-centric features and community. Today they officially announced a new design, which places larger video embeds front and center, and which they will be rolling out over the next few weeks.

The boys at Brainstorm Digital have put together a great BTS look at how Boardwalk Empire’s special effects come together to bring you the finished product that you end up seeing. It blows my mind when I see things like this, because I have very little knowledge as to how it is done. Enjoy!
